ENGAGING STUDENTS IN INDEPENDENT WORK

Here are some quick checks to help your student complete their independent work:
  • Make sure your students know what is expected and you have a routines for them. Remind them of these before starting. (You must teach what is expected or the students won't know what they need to do.)
  • Model what you expect before allowing them to begin. (This will remove having to reteach when you see they didn't understand.)
  • Make sure that students are using previously-learned strategies. (This is a time for practice not learning something new.)
  • Use the students' work and behavior as a barometer. (If they are not engaged they are telling you the activity has no meaning to them from their point of view, the activity is to hard or easy.)

Independent work is difficult to plan but very important in the students learning because it allow them time to practice the skill and build understanding.
